Formed by Our Industry, for Our Industry
The SubOptic organization exists to promote, foster debate, exchange ideas and act as an educational resource for the entire submarine telecommunications community.
With its first convention held in 1986, SubOptic is a non-profit, mutual, non-incorporated international organisation. It is steered and sponsored by leading members of the community. However, it is open to every level of our industry, from those who manufacture cables and their components to purchasers of cable networks and system capacity to business analysts and investors.
The governance of SubOptic is exercised by an Executive Committee operating under a Constitution and By-Laws. Its membership has varied since its formation from between 14-19 member companies, representing the various strands of our community. The membership changes between each conference cycle, reflecting the changing composition of our community. This allows the EC's membership to reflect the changing realities of our industry and new members are encouraged to apply.
The EC is chaired by a President elected from one of its member organisations. This role for the SubOptic 2016 conference cycle is undertaken by Yves Ruggeri from Orange, who is in charge of Network Strategy and Submarine Systems Department.
The EC is supported by John Horne, who acts as the Secretary to the organisation and has been in this role since 2001.
The Programme for each event is formulated by a Programme Committee, for SubOptic 2013 this will be chaired by Richard Elliott, Managing Director of Apollo SCS. This will the first occasion the Chair has come from outside the vendor segment of the industry.
As another departure a seperate Papers Committee will be formed to support the SubOptic 2013 Programme Committee. This will be chaired by Alice Shelton, Technical Area, Marketing Manager for Alcatel-Lucent.
